Keekorok Lodge

Muthu Keekorok Lodge is one of Kenya’s most historic safari lodges, located in the heart of the world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve. It is widely recognized as the first permanent safari lodge built in the Maasai Mara and has been welcoming visitors since the 1960s. The lodge sits within a large private area of grassland and natural springs, giving guests immediate access to the Mara ecosystem and its wildlife. 

The name “Keekorok” comes from the Maasai language and is associated with the idea of abundance or a place of many things—a fitting description for an area surrounded by wildlife and fertile plains.

Nearest airstrip: Keekorok Airstrip (short transfer from the lodge)

The lodge’s location is one of its strongest advantages. It lies along the route used by migrating wildebeest and zebras during the annual Great Migration, making it especially attractive between July and October. 

Approximate travel:

  • From Nairobi by road: about 5–6 hours depending on road conditions

  • By air: around 45–60 minutes from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Keekorok Airstrip, followed by a short lodge transfer

History

Keekorok has a special place in East African safari history.

  • Established in the early 1960s, it became the first major lodge development in the Maasai Mara. 

  • It was built during the era when Kenya was emerging as a leading global safari destination.

  • The lodge helped introduce international travelers to the Mara’s wildlife landscapes.

  • Over the years it has hosted safari travelers, photographers, conservationists, and public figures.

Its architecture reflects classic safari style, using natural materials such as stone and local woods to blend with the environment.
