Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Morning / Afternoon:

  • Arrival at Kigali International Airport.

  • Meet your safari guide at the airport.

  • Drive approximately 2.5–3 hours to Musanze (Ruhengeri), the gateway to Volcanoes National Park.

  • Scenic drive through Rwanda’s rolling hills, tea plantations, and banana farms.

Evening:

  • Check-in at a lodge or luxury tented camp near the park (e.g., Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, Virunga Lodge, or Mountain Gorilla View Lodge).

  • Welcome briefing by your guide:

    • Gorilla trekking rules & safety

    • Park regulations

    • Physical preparation tips for trekking

  • Dinner at the lodge.

  • Optional: Relax under the stars or enjoy a lodge bar/lounge.

Tips:

  • Make sure your gear is ready: hiking shoes, long pants, waterproof jacket, gloves, hat, and water bottle.

  • Rest well; the trek can be physically demanding.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Adventure

Early Morning:

  • Breakfast at the lodge (usually served 5:30–6:30 am).

  • Transfer to Volcanoes National Park headquarters.

  • Registration & briefing by park rangers:

    • Gorilla families to be tracked

    • Safety & etiquette rules

    • Trekking group assignments (usually 8 visitors per gorilla family)

Gorilla Trekking:

  • Start trekking through the bamboo forests, lush montane forest, and hillsides.

  • Duration: 2–6 hours depending on gorilla location.

  • Experience the thrill of seeing gorillas in their natural habitat.

  • Observation time: 1 hour with gorillas per park rules.

    • Photos allowed, but maintain respectful distance.

    • Watch infants, playful interactions, and feeding behavior.

Lunch:

  • Return to lodge for lunch or picnic in designated areas (depending on trek timing).

Afternoon Options:

  • Optional: Visit Dian Fossey’s Grave and Karisoke Research Center nearby.

Evening:

  • Dinner at lodge.

Day 3: Optional Activities & Return to Kigali / Departure

Morning (Optional depending on schedule):

  • Golden Monkey Trekking – Shorter trek (~2 hours) to see endangered golden monkeys in Volcanoes NP.

  • Nature walks – Explore local trails or visit local villages for cultural immersion.

  • Breakfast at lodge.

Midday:

  • Check out and drive back to Kigali (2.5–3 hours).

Afternoon:

  • Stop for lunch en route (optional, depending on flight schedule).

  • Arrival in Kigali.

  • Transfer to Kigali International Airport for departure or onward travel.
