Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Akagera National Park

Morning:

  • Arrival at Kigali International Airport.

  • Meet your professional safari guide at the airport.

  • Optional Kigali city sightseeing if you arrive early (Genocide Memorial, local markets).

Midday / Afternoon:

  • Drive approx. 2.5–3 hours to Akagera National Park.

  • Scenic journey through Rwanda’s rolling hills, tea and banana plantations, and local villages.

Late Afternoon / Evening:

  • Check-in at lodge or tented camp near the park:

    • Ruzizi Tented Lodge (luxury)

    • Akagera Game Lodge (mid-range)

  • Evening briefing with your guide: overview of safari, safety tips, and Big Five info.

  • Dinner and overnight at lodge.

Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive & Lake Ihema Boat Safari

Early Morning (6:00 – 7:30 am):

  • Breakfast at lodge.

  • Depart for full-day game drive in 4×4 safari vehicles.

  • Explore savannah, wetlands, and forested areas.

Morning Game Drive:

  • Look for the Big Five: lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo, and (rarely) rhinos.

  • Spot giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippos, and crocodiles.

  • Birdwatching: over 500 bird species, including African fish eagles and herons.

Midday (12:00 – 1:30 pm):

  • Picnic lunch at a scenic spot inside the park.

Afternoon:

  • Continue game drive to other parts of the park, including Lake Ihema.

  • Board a boat safari on Lake Ihema: see hippos, crocodiles, and water birds up close.

  • Visit papyrus swamps and island bird sanctuaries.

Evening (5:30 – 6:30 pm):

  • Return to lodge for dinner.

  • Optional night walk near lodge to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive & Optional Cultural or Nature Activities

  • Optional sunrise game drive or guided birdwatching walk.

Morning:

  • Breakfast at lodge.

  • Second game drive to explore park areas not covered on Day 2.

  • Opportunity for photography and tracking wildlife with experienced guides.

Afternoon (12:00 – 4:00 pm):

  • Lunch at lodge.

  • Optional activities:

    • Visit local cultural villages near the park for traditional crafts and dances.

    • Guided nature walks along the park boundary to explore flora and smaller wildlife.

Evening:

  • Return to lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Return to Kigali & Departure

Morning (7:00 – 9:00 am):

  • Breakfast at lodge.

  • Check-out and scenic drive back to Kigali (2.5–3 hours).

Optional Stop:

  • Stop for lunch en route or short Kigali city tour if flight schedule allows.

Afternoon:

  • Arrival at Kigali International Airport for departure.
